Hi, I’m Sahil Mane. A bite-sized bio...

I am a Juhu, Mumbai-based photographer who specialises in portraitsfashionspaces and things with an active photo-art career to boot. My photographs have been published in VogueElle DécorHello!India TodayOutlookBBC GoodHomesAndpersandMTV’s Noise FactorySociety InteriorsBetter Interiors, 3QuarksDaily.com and Home Review; and clients include Cocoon Fine RugsIL&FSAmbuja CementSilver Beach CafeSwarup Group of Industries, and ad agenciesarchitects and designers across the country. I also teach photography to postgraduate students of mass media at MET, Mumbai, and conduct regular workshops.

An IT engineer by qualification (from SBMP, Mumbai) and a photographer by calling, I took a slightly circuitous route to reach my dream. This involved stints as a writer (with DNA, NayaMode and IMS); and web and TV videographer and journalist (with CNBC and ET NOW). 2010 saw me graduate the year-long course at the prestigious Hallmark Institute of Photography in Turners Falls, Massachusetts, USA. My works were first displayed at the Gallery at Hallmark

Life’s never been the same after the media coverage and awards I received for my art-photography shows: Orgasm!, my first solo show, a collection of edgy, sensual abstracts depicting the tempo, tone, texture, intensity and passion of a pre, during and post-coital experience; and Arousal, a pre-orgasmic state of mind. Orgasm! opened in New Delhi’s prestigious Gallerie Nvya in April 2011, then showed at the Gallery at Svenska, Mumbai, through June. It won twice at the International Photography Awards 2011‘32 Mind Creative’, Andpersand magazine’s search for 32 uber-creative souls; and the LA Center for Digital Art’s LACDA ‘Top 40’ Juried Competition 2011. Works from the show have been displayed at the latter contests’ respective exhibitions in New Delhi and LA. In 2012, I became the only Indian artist to be represented by LACDA, with my works being included in its eight-year retrospective. Arousal opened at Contemporary Musings and Beyond, a group show highlighting the contemporary design movement at the Cocoon Gallery, Mumbai, in April 2012. Apart from listings, the shows have been written about on artslant.com and visualdisobedience.com, and in Mumbai MirrorMail TodayMidDayIndian ExpressBombay TimesHindustan TimesThe Times of IndiaBBC GoodHomesDesign TodayThe PioneerSunday Guardian, Femina… you get the drift! For three months in mid-2012, I was selected to be one of three resident artists at The Last Ship, an art residency in Mumbai.

I am blessed with an equally strong left brain (honed by my
engineering degree) and right brain (encouraged by
architect parents; and stints with web and TV, as a writer, and ongoing engagements with videography and photography). Photographs and video are 2D, traditionally seen as capturing only the visual aspect of a moment in time. Through my lens’s eye, I attempt to also portray more—the emotional, sensory, spiritual and other—dimensions of my focus. My unique, inquisitive worldview is reflected in my distinctive and eccentric style that is, essentially, me.
